My Journey

MY JOURNEY

My name is Julie, and I started my textile adventures at an early age: I was constantly creating outfits for my various dolls from yarn and fabric scraps. Over the years I have learnt to crochet, knit, spin (various wheels and spindles), weave, felt, patchwork & quilting, various embroidery and machine sewing techniques, photography, colour and design.

As a former medical scientist I played with dyes daily and have honed my skills of observation, theory and practise in dyeing processes. Dissatisfied with the yarns available at the time, the decision to dye yarn was a natural progression for me. Family and friends encouraged me to present my yarn for sale and Dyed By Hand Yarns was born.

Fast-forward to the present, and I am now surrounded by an Australian semi-rural setting in West Gippsland, Australia. I spend much of my time immersed in fibre related pursuits, combining the wonderous colours of nature with yarn to tell my story.

DYEING AS A BUSINESS

My aim is to dye unique repeatable colourways on high quality yarn bases. The yarn is available online as well as at various markets that I attend throughout the year.

Most of my colour inspiration comes from the world around us: from observation as well as photos and online resources. Other ideas come from songs, movies, literature, the changing seasons and especially Australiana. I am constantly fascinated by the way that the Australian sunlight influences how we see color here - clear, bright, bold and mysterious.

All yarn and fibre is dyed in a smoke-free, pet-friendly environment. Great care is taken to ensure that no pet hair is allowed near the yarn, however I cannot give a 100% guarantee.
