DBHY – 2014 in review

With 2014 fast drawing to a close, I find myself reflecting on the events of the year past. Did you know that DBHY has been in business for about two and a half years? A lot of hard work along the way has led to where we are now, and there are big plans for the future. But first I’ll let you know why you haven’t seen much of us on the internet.

When DBHY started, I was working part-time at my ‘real’ job, which left a reasonable amount of time for dyeing, photography, website updates, admin, social media etc….. all of this adds up to a full time job in itself! Anyway, about February, my part-time job came to an end. I did a bit of travelling, visiting family in March, and started a new job in late March; this time it’s full-time.

We attend three big events during the year now: the Handknitters Guild of Victoria‘s Yarn and Craft Market (May) in Melbourne, the Australian Sheep and Wool Show (July) in Bendigo, and the Victorian Branch of the Australian Lace Guild in Melbourne (sometime around Sept-Nov); also, our Simply Sock yarn club runs from March to July. This means that dyeing alone to keep up with demand takes up all of my spare time, leaving no room for website updates, blogging, creating new colours, or even a bit of crafting of my own. Very disappointing and frustrating, knowing how hard it has been to get this far.

A New Hope!

But there is an up side to having to return to full-time work. Whilst traveling in March we passed through some beautiful countryside in East Gippsland and fell in love with the area. Long story short – we bought The Farm! All this full time work means that we were able to purchase a wonderful spacious 2-storey house on a chunk of land, with an entire floor to be devoted to DBHY! A dedicated kitchen to dye in; an office space for admin; a large room for stock storage; and a table for sorting of orders. There are so many possibilities, we may even have some sheep and alpacas to crop the grass and play with their fleece! These pictures were taken at our first inspection, so the previous owners stuff is still all over the place.

It will be a few years before we move here permenantly, and a lot of work to be done in the meantime, but we cannot wait to start our new adventure! In the meantime, I hope that you will all be understanding and patient whilst we transition from the city to the country life. Don’t forget that you can always contact us at julie@dyedbyhandyarns.com if you have any questions or special requests, or check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Ravelry.

We wish you all a safe, peaceful and joyous Holiday Season, and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year 🙂

FPF: Washing Day Blues, and Greens, and Pinks, and…

This week’s Free Pattern Friday celebrates the arrival in-store of fresh supplies of Soak, including the Ravelry-inspired special edition, Unleash. I thought I’d look for patterns inspired by washing, soaking, and laundry in general! For the crochet pattern, I have chosen the adorable Foamies by Carey Huffman – bath toy and washcloth in one cute… Continue Reading

FPF: Wool!

With only seven sleeps until the 137th Australian Sheep and Wool Show, I did a pattern search on ‘Wool’. Here is this week’s selection for Free Pattern Friday. The Sheep and Wool Hat by Emily Spence has a simple geometric pattern that is achieved by stranded knitting. Worked in 10ply/worsted weight yarn, this quick knit… Continue Reading
