FPF: Spring Race Carnival

Here in Melbourne the Spring Racing Carnival is drawing to a close, so I thought that a couple of horse related patterns would be perfect for today’s Free Pattern Friday.

Dual Sided Horse Scarf by Miranda Stanbery

Whilst Spring should be a warm time of year, Melbourne is notorious for it’s “four seasons in one day”. What better way to ward off any cool breeze at the races than with your own Dual Sided Horse Scarf by Miranda Stanbery? This scarf is double knitted, using 10ply/worsted weight yarn and 5mm needles. If you haven’t done double knitting before you might like to check out a tutorial before giving this a go; it’s not difficult but there are a few specific ‘rules’. The pattern contains the chart for the running horse, and basic knitting instructions, but there is a lot of scope to change this pattern by adding other motifs, or using different yarns. See the Ravelry project page to get some ideas and see what others have done.

Trusty Old Dobbin Hobby Horse by Lion Brand Yarn

A racing carnival would not be complete without your very own horse! I love the vintage innocence of the Trusty Old Dobbin Hobby Horse by Lion Brand Yarns, crocheted using bulky yarn and an appropriately large crochet hook. The pattern includes materials and instructions for finishing the project with the ‘riding stick’, and is written in US crochet terms (see here for Australian/UK terms). Why not make a field of different Hobby Horses, and hold your own race day?

FPF: Washing Day Blues, and Greens, and Pinks, and…

This week’s Free Pattern Friday celebrates the arrival in-store of fresh supplies of Soak, including the Ravelry-inspired special edition, Unleash. I thought I’d look for patterns inspired by washing, soaking, and laundry in general! For the crochet pattern, I have chosen the adorable Foamies by Carey Huffman – bath toy and washcloth in one cute… Continue Reading

FPF: Wool!

With only seven sleeps until the 137th Australian Sheep and Wool Show, I did a pattern search on ‘Wool’. Here is this week’s selection for Free Pattern Friday. The Sheep and Wool Hat by Emily Spence has a simple geometric pattern that is achieved by stranded knitting. Worked in 10ply/worsted weight yarn, this quick knit… Continue Reading

FPF: Sheep!

Two weeks and counting until the 137th Australian Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo! This week I did a free pattern search on ‘Sheep’. Wow, there are a lot of sheep related patterns, especially toy sheep. I’ve decided to pick out a knitted sheep backpack, and a crocheted sheep hat. I wonder if I have… Continue Reading

FPF: Shark Time Pouch and Tumbling Bunnies

Whilst looking for inspiration for this week’s Free Pattern Friday, I decided I wanted something that could use up some stash left overs, and also something a bit quirky. I think you’ll agree that I’ve succeeded with these ‘toys’ for all kids great and small. A quick note on safety: please don’t use buttons/beads/bits/beans on… Continue Reading
