FPF: Frosty Night Cowl and Nordic Night Gloves

To celebrate the Night’s Watch SKAL collaboration with Cat and Sparrow Fibres and Lara Smoot Designs, I thought I’d make “Night” the theme of this week’s Free Pattern Friday.

Frosty Night Cowl by Deborah E. Burger

The Frosty Night Cowl by Deborah E. Burger is crocheted lace made in the true mobius fashion. If you’re not familiar with a mobius strip, it is a geometric shape with one surface and one edge (see here for the Wiki description). This cowl can be made with any weight yarn and the appropriate sized crochet hook, and can be made any length or width you like. Try lace weight yarn for a feathery accessory with fine stitch definition, or heavy weight to keep out the icy bite of winter! The pattern is written in US crochet terms, see here for a conversion table to Australian/UK crochet terms.

Nordic Nights Gloves by Drops Design

These gloves are part of the Nordic Nights set by Drops Design which includes gloves, socks, beanie and jumper. I particularly like the look of the Norwegian pattern on the long arms of the gloves. Using 8ply/DK weight yarn and stranded knitting, these are sure to be very warm on the hands! And if the thought of knitting all of the fingers is daunting, why not make a fingerless mitt: do a loose/stretchy cast off instead of starting the finger construction. Just don’t forget to finish off the thumbs.

We would love to see photos of any finished objects/WIPs from any of the patterns we present in this blog. Don’t be shy! 😉

  1. Hello Julie

One of my team at Trajan scientific and medical was just talking to Julian and he thought you might have some of the limelight in stock.

If you could let me know what’s in stock I would love to get hold of some sock wool

Particularly love the spotted gum as well
