About Us

About Us – the business

At Dyed By Hand Yarns, our aim is to produce unique hand dyed colourways on high quality bases. We sell yarn and fibre via our website, and do not have a ‘bricks and mortar’ shop. However we do get out and about to various yarn related events. Keep an eye out for event details: We’d love to see you there! You can join our mailing list, follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Ravelry for details.

All yarns and fibres are carefully selected and lovingly hand dyed: We figure that if we wouldn’t want to use our own products, why should you? Yarns are of high quality milling, and contain different natural luxury animal fibres. A few of the yarns also contain nylon for strength. Animal fibres include merino wool, Blue Faced Leicester wool, silk, cashmere, baby alpaca, baby camel and kid mohair.

Professional acid dyes are used to create our colourways, which means that we use household vinegar to set the colours on the yarn. All yarns are washed in environmentally friendly wool wash and rinsed to remove excess dye/vinegar. Where possible, we use rainwater for all our water needs and reuse the wash/rinse water to wash clothing and bedding.

All yarn/fibre is dyed in a smoke-free, pet-friendly area. Care is taken to ensure that no pet hairs are allowed near the yarns, however we cannot give a 100% hair-free guarantee. If you have strong allergies to cats or dogs, you purchase our yarn at your own risk.

About Us – the person

My name is Julie Boydell, and I have been crocheting, knitting and generally crafting from an early age. Over the years I have learnt spinning and weaving, various hand and machine sewing techniques, felting, quilting, photography, colour and design. As a former medical scientist I played with dyes daily, and have honed my skills of observation, theory and practise in dyeing processes. As a result, the decision to dye yarns was a natural progression of this. Family and friends encouraged me to present my wares for sale, and Dyed By Hand Yarns was born.

Most of my inspiration for colours comes from photographs of the world around us, some taken by me. Other ideas come from songs, movies, literature, the changing seasons and especially Australiana. If you have something particular in mind, please contact us on julie@dyedbyhandyarns.com

Logo Design

Many thanks to the talented Pete Burdell of Visual Ink Tattoo for designing the Dyed By Hand Yarns logo that appears at the top of this website and on all of our products.
